Online Scanner FAQ

I can't listen to the feed! Please help!

There may be several reasons for this.

If you cannot hear other streaming multimedia feeds elsewhere on the web, ensure that your soundcard and speakers are
properly connected and configured. Since soundcards and their configuration can be tricky at times, we will do our best
to help, but can only provide limited support.

If you can hear other online feeds but not this one, please try all of the Media Player Logos on the main page until one works.
If you tried all four and still cannot connect, please contact us using the "Contact Us" menu option to the left.
We have tried our best to provide compatibility for all media players. If possible, we recommend you download either WINAMP
or iTunes.

What equipment is being used for this feed?

A Uniden BC-246T is used as the scanner. A Cushcraft dual band ham antenna (tuned to Public Safety) is used to
optimize reception in the 150 MHz/450 MHz Public Safety bands. The audio from the scanner is ran into the
computer hosting the feed's servers: Shoutcast by Nullsoft and Icecast. There is also a data connection
from the scanner to the host computer, which provides the frequency/channel information for the Alpha Tags.
The MP3 encoder (which feeds the servers) is Simplecast from SpacialAudio. The encoder is also responsible
for inserting the Alpha Tags information into the stream.

Where is all this junk located?

El Dorado, California. Located about 40 miles East of Sacramento.

El Dorado the town is just one stop sign (okay maybe three). Poor Red's Restaurant has put us on the map for
some of the best ribs West of the Mississippi (not counting Texas of course!!).

El Dorado County is home to world class skiing of the Sierra Nevadas in the winter, the world class
category 5 rapids of the American River for rafting in the summer, as well as the famous 4x4 trail: The Rubicon.
El Dorado County also contains a portion of Lake Tahoe and Folsom Lake. In addition, the El Dorado Forest
and Desolation Wilderness provide endless hours of hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing. As many
historians will be quick to mention, El Dorado County is also the home of the 1849 Gold Rush which took place
at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, about 15 miles north of El Dorado.

I like or hate your feed!! Can I set-up one for my area?

Yes! There are several different methods and programs out there to get you streaming. Some are audio only.
Some combine the scanner audio along with a video camera shot of the scanner display to provide a similar
effect to the one provided by this feed.

If there are so many ways to set up a feed, why did you choose this one?

There are two reasons:

1. Listeners enjoy being able to know who they are listening to! This feed fulfills this by the use of the
Alpha Tags in the Winamp player.

2. Bandwidth. The method of combining a video camera shot of the scanner display with the scanner audio is an
effective way of letting listeners know who they are listening to, but is comes with a big cost: bandwidth.
A dial-up user has no hope whatsoever of tuning into such a feed. The method on this feed solves that problem.
Also, the feed provider has a finite amount of total bandwidth available to all listeners. Having a feed that uses
a much smaller amount of bandwidth per listener, allows that feed to accomodate many more users. This is very
useful for major events, like the forest fires in Northern California, where the number of listeners may spike wildly.

This all sounds great! How do I get started?

There are several references on the web to help you get started:

The first is a set of tutorials written by Scott H. of ScanCapeCod.us. Scott covers a few of the different methods
available and his tutorials are five star, grade AAA, first class.
